Sun Screened

Doutzen Kroes, British Vogue 2013
I am naturally blonde haired and fair skinned so I unfortunately don’t go a deep Mediterranean brown in the sun – more so a flushed beige with freckles! I found sun cream was both difficult to apply and didn’t work fast enough which often resulted in the classic ‘Brit abroad’ persona of a slightly patchy, rouged complexion. Thankfully, the new Nivea Sun Protect & Refresh Invisible Cooling Mist has surpassed my particular concerns as not only does it immediately protect but has a refreshing cooling sensation.  Additionally the 360° valve means that it can be used from all angles (upside down, sideways, behind your back) making it easy to protect all the hard places to reach that one often misses.  Just spritz over the body for a cooling, even protection without any feeling of stickiness.Buy it here

For the face however, I like all, need something stronger.  I have noticed recently how the lines between sun care and skin care have become increasingly blurred. Many brands are bridging the gap as they realise the direct link between sun and aging, often tendering an elegant solution. My personal favourite has to be the new Estee Lauder DayWear with SPF 50. It lightly hydrates whilst providing the upmost protection to my pale complexion and I have begun to wear it every day – even in the cloudy city of London as skin damaging UV rays are present year round. Sun cream it seems has shed its reputation as simply being your beach bag essential but more appropriately as a staple in your daily skincare regime protecting you from much more than just the sun. Bold Brows

They are often ignored or forgotten yet eyebrows have a transformative effect on your appearance. Full, bushy brows were everywhere at the Autumn/Winter catwalks which, admittedly was almost single-handedly down to the Cara Delevingne effect. Long gone, it seems are the days of plucking your every last hair - more so, the focus is on thick yet subtly groomed brows which can have an outstanding ability to highlight and lift your whole face. Personally, my favourite tweezers have got to be La Tweez - not only are they sharp and precise, but they have a built in light to help you follow your natural brow line and illuminate any stray hairs you may have otherwise missed.  Buy La Tweez Professional here

The Experts: Blink Brow Bar

If you find tweezing too fiddley, then I recommend threading from Blink Brow Bar. The phrase 'you've got to suffer to be beautiful' may spring to mind as the slight pinching can be uncomfortable, however, all is forgotten when you view your perfectly sculpted and symmetrical brows. Best of all, the clean finish meant results lasted for up to 2 weeks! Book an appointment here

The Cover Up

A lucky few are blessed with perfectly even skin tone, but for the rest of us it is a very different story. I for one found it tricky to find a product that covered the dark circles and blemishes without looking too heavy. Thankfully, NARS has solved my dilemma! The Creamy Concealer has light reflecting technology which blurs imperfections and dark spots without ever looking 'cakey'. It is rare that products actually live up to their promises but I can honestly vouch for the benefits, not only to your appearance but skin condition. Anyone can cheat a well rested, illuminated appearance, as available in 10 shades there is something to suit every skin tone.

The Sunday Star - Charlotte Tilbury

"Not even my husband has seen me without make-up - never will! It's a fantasy, he's bought into that fantasy and he's going to live in that fantasy!"

This week I am taking inspiration from Charlotte Tilbury ahead of her House of Rock n' Khol launching  this week at Selfridges. At the age of 13 Charlotte discovered mascara and since then has led a life time devoted to make up! With the prestigious title of Kate Moss' 'favourite make-up artist', she has worked with other industry greats, such as creating the make-up for shows including Chloe, Donna Karen, Kenzo, Matthew Williamson and Victoria Beckham, not to mention countless Vogue credits. This week she launches her own make-up collection and I for one can't wait to see what magic she has in store.

See here for all of the details about the Rock n' Khol launch

The Tanning Ritual

With summer just around the corner, most of us are dreading baring our pale winter skin that has spent months hibernating beneath winter layers. I have found there to be 4 easy options to cheat that perfect sun-kissed glow, leaving you feeling sexy and summer ready.

1. The Prep

It is often said that preparation is the key to success, and this could not be more true for achieving the perfect tan. Exfoliation removes all of the dead skin cells and gives you a smooth base to apply your colour evenly. I would recommend Bliss Blood Orange & White Pepper Sugar Scrub, £28.60. It gently softens and smooths skin, leaving it clean and fresh and ready for tanning. Buy it here

2. The Gradual Tan

If you want a steady, believable tan then a gradual tanner is the best option to give you that healthy glow, no matter what time of year. I use La Prairie Gradual Tanning Lotion for Face and Body, £62 which is perfect for achieving that even sun-kissed look. Best of all it doesn't smell of fake tan so no one will know your secret! Buy it here

3. The Self Tanning Lotion

If you have delicate skin the St Tropez Sensitive Untinted Body Lotion, £28 achieves the same professional results in a hypoallergenic way. The natural ingredients of Avocado Butter melts into your skin to give off a radiant, streak free glow. Best of all it is not orange in the slightest and gives you the wealthy, velvety colour you would expect from St Tropez. Buy it here

4. The Self Tanning Spray

This is a quick fix to cheating holiday skin. I haven't found better than L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Express Self-Tanning Dry Mist, £7.33. No need to rub in and no streaks, just spritz the mist over your body which takes a matter of minutes. An easy, understated way to build up a groomed and bronzed appearance. Buy it here

Scent Sensation

There is nothing to make a place feel more like home than a beautiful familiar scent. I stumbled across these gorgeous scented candles whilst wondering around John Lewis and they have made the perfect addition to my apartment. I have Bluebell Forest in my kitchen, Fairy Dust in my lounge and Silent Night on my bedside table. They literally fill each room with a warm glow and delicious aroma. See Lily Flame for all of the other luscious scents.

The Sunday Star - Estee Lauder

This week the Sunday Star is the ultimate beauty icon, Estee Lauder. She single handedly founded her Estee Lauder Companies in 1935. After persuading some New York department store bosses to give her counter space at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1948, her brand went from strength to strength with it now being worth billions thanks to her hard work and dedication. I will leave you now with one of her most inspirational quotes to start your weeks;

"If you have a goal, if you want to be successful, if you really want to do it, you’ve got to work hard, you’ve got to stick to it and you’ve got to believe in what you’re doing"

An optimum representative of girl power!

The Pale Nails

My Nails using Essie Nail Colour in Allure
Valentino S/S 2013

There was a big focus on Pale Nails at the Spring Summer 2013 Catwalks. From Chanel, Dolce and Gabbana and Valentino (Above) nails were elegantly preened and polished to create a natural glow at the tips of your fingers. I have just used Essie Nail Colour in Allure to recreate this look, which gives a lovely spring shine to your nails and cost just £7.99 from any Boots store. Link to Boots Website

The Hero Product

I know this product is what some would say, 'old news' but, when it's a classic it is definitely worth shouting about. I just couldn't think of a better product to start my blog than with my beauty best friend. Perfect for dry spots and minor skin conditions to sooth roughness and redness. I could not have survived this arctic winter without applying this to my chapped lips and sore corners of my nose from the everlasting cold I had! My top tip is applying it to your eyebrows. It really tames them and smooths them into a beautiful shape that lasts...well, eight hours!

An Introduction

Well here goes! If I have learnt anything from my internships at Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and Grazia, it would definitely be that the best way to grow as a journalist is just practice makes perfect! So I have decided to do just that and dive right in to explore my passion and discover all things beauty. From the skin regimes to the supplements and the products to the top industry tips, I will pick my beauty brains and see where it takes me...
